County Championship: Hampshire earn comfortable win at Sussex

Hampshire pace bowler Fidel Edwards has taken 13 wickets in the County Championship this season

Five wickets for seamer Fidel Edwards helped Hampshire to their first Championship win of the season at Hove.

Having resumed on 142-5, Sussex lost Stuart Magoffin to Edwards (5-58) without adding to the overnight score.

Luke Wright (84) and Ben Brown (52) put on 120 for the seventh wicket, but the home side then lost their final three wickets for only four runs.

Having been set 126 to win, opener Sean Terry's unbeaten 62 helped his side ease to a six-wicket win.

Edwards' five-wicket haul gave the former West Indies bowler his best figures since signing for Hampshire in March.

Wright and Brown's knocks looked to have given Sussex some hope of rescuing the game despite losing nightwatchman Magoffin early on.

But, after Wright was run out, Jackson Bird struck to remove Brown and leave Sussex eight down and just 122 ahead at lunch.

Sussex lost their final two wickets shortly after the interval, before Jimmy Adams and Terry made 51 for Hampshire's opening partnership.

And Terry hit the winning run which lifted the visitors off the foot of the Division One table.

Sussex captain Ed Joyce:

"I thought we were second best in a poor game to be honest.

"In the first innings we should have score 350-400 and if we had I think we would have won from there so be bowled out for 251 by a side that was pretty low in confidence was hugely disappointing.

"We have got five bowlers missing and that is a massive mitigating factor and we have batted on some pretty average wickets in the last few weeks.

"We lack a bit of confidence, myself included, as a result."

Hampshire batsman Sean Terry:

"The guys have been working really hard in the last few weeks. We have stuck at it and this is our reward.

"On that wicket you had to be positive and once I'd got myself in it was my responsibility to see the guys home and I managed to do that.

"I have got a few 50s in the past so hopefully this will give me the confidence to push on and score big runs in the future.

"The wicket had a few cracks and I got a painful blow on the thumb but it was worth it."
