Opening batsman Rob Key top-scored with 94 as Kent were all out for 309 on day one of their Championship match against Glamorgan at Cardiff.
Key helped the visitors reach 212-2 before he was caught off David Lloyd.
Sean Dickson (59), Sam Northeast (56) and Darren Stevens (64) also batted well, while Michael Hogan took 4-51.
In reply, Glamorgan were 65-4 at the close, having initially slipped to 4-2 as James Kettleborough and Jeremy Lawlor went in the first two overs.
Glamorgan still have their sights on finishing the season in third place in Division Two, but started the game in fifth, one point behind Gloucestershire and four adrift of Northants.
And Hogan and spinner Lloyd (3-80) were the leading figures as Kent's last eight wickets went down for 97 runs.
The visitors fought back in the final session with Matt Coles taking 2-27, but Chris Cooke was 20 not out at stumps with Glamorgan 244 in arrears.
Glamorgan fast bowler Michael Hogan:
"The conditions changed when the clouds came in, we felt it got flat at times and then it started swinging around again.
"We were probably rusty as a bowling unit in the first session and a half. We haven't played for a while.
"But, after that, in the back end of the day, we picked up some wickets and bowled really tightly. We're still in the game."
