Chris Froome and Team Sky finished fifth in the team time trial of the Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain).

The 27-year-old Briton and his team were 12 seconds behind Movistar, led by Spain's Jonathan Castroviejo.

Sky completed the first stage around the streets of Pamplona in a time of 19 minutes and three seconds, having led at the split.

Froome finished second in the Tour de France and took bronze in the Olympic time trial, won by Bradley Wiggins.

Team Saxo Bank, featuring Alberto Contador, were three seconds behind Sky.

The Spanish cyclist, stripped of his 2010 Tour de France title for failing a doping test, finished a two-year ban on 5 August.

Sunday's second stage runs over a 181.4km course from Pamplona to Viana.
