La Course: Lizzie Armitstead fourth as Anna van der Breggen wins

Britain's Lizzie Armitstead finished fourth as Anna van der Breggen won the second edition of La Course by Le Tour de France in a rain-soaked Paris.

The 25-year-old Dutch rider broke clear of the peloton with around 6km of the race remaining and held off the chasing pack to win on the Champs-Elysees.

Armitstead followed Jolien d'Hoore and Amy Pieters over the line.

"I'm disappointed for my team-mates," said Armitstead. "We rode a good race, I just wasn't fast enough at the end."

The Boels-Dolman rider, who won the British national title in June, crashed out of last year's inaugural race but stayed upright in a race that was littered with crashes on treacherous roads in the French capital.

However, she was unable to close down Van der Breggen who has won the women's Giro d'Italia, the Dutch time trial title and also the Fleche Wallonne in 2015.

"We had a good plan," said Rabo Liv rider Van der Breggen. "We said we would attack in the last lap.

"It's hard when you have the peloton chasing you. This is one of the biggest races I have won with so many people here. It was a hard and beautiful race."

The 13-lap 89km one-day race precedes the finale to the men's Tour de France which arrives in Paris on Sunday afternoon.
