Diamond League: Paralympian Stef Reid sets long jump record

Reid missed out on a medal at last year's IPC World Championships

Britain's Stef Reid has set an F44 long jump record at the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow.

Reid, 29, who had her right leg amputated below the knee after a boating accident when she was 16, jumped 5.47m in the opening round of the competition at Hampden Park.

Reid had managed 5.45m in Florida in April but the jump has not been recognised as a world record.

The previous world record was 5.43 from France's Marie-Amelie Le Fur.

Le Fur herself finished second to Reid having equalled her personal best in the second round.

Reid, who won silver in the long jump at the London 2012 Paralympics, won $15,000 (£8,760) for her achievement.

"It was hard for me because I set the record in the first round and I wanted to celebrate but still had five rounds left," Reid told BBC Sport afterwards.

"It was amazing - coming out, it felt like London 2012 again and the crowd were great.

"Last year was so hard after the Paralympics and I don't think I have jumped so poorly but I knew I could go further and now I am so glad I stayed in the sport."

Wheelchair racer David Weir also won his T53/54 1,500m event as he continued his preparation for racing for England over the same distance at the Commonwealth Games.

The four-time London gold medallist eased to victory in three minutes 8.78 seconds with Japan's Masayuki Higuchi second (3:09.70)

"I wanted to come here to see what the track and crowd were like before the Commonwealth Games and everything looks great," he said.
