Crewe Alexandra have completed a deal to bring goalkeeper Alan Martin to Gresty Road on a one-year deal.

The 22-year-old, who spent a spell with Ayr United last term, joined the Alex for a two-week trial after being released by Leeds United.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "This year is really big for me. I want to play and [fellow Crewe keeper] Steve Phillips wants to play.

"I'm not going to give him an easy ride. Hopefully I'll get my chance."

Martin, who has played just seven matches in the Football League, added: "If I do, I'm hoping I'll take it.

"At the moment he's the number one and you can understand why."

The Scotland Under-21 international failed to make a first-team appearance at Elland Road and his only Football League experience came in a loan spell at Accrington, but he impressed enough in a short trial to earn a contract with the Alex.

"I just want to get back into full-time football and it's great to be at a club like this," he added.

Phillips, who has played more than 500 games in his career, is likely to start the season in goal for Crewe, and Martin says the two have already developed a good working relationship.

"The two of us have got on really well," said Martin. "He told me a lot about the club and it's all helped me through my time here.

"I get on really well with him and I hope that continues."
