Crewe Alexandra striker Shaun Miller was among the goals as the first team beat Quorn FC 9-1 on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old scored five while Danny Shelley, Byron Moore, Ashley Westwood and Jason Oswell completed the scoring against the part-timers.

Alex manager Dario Gradi said: "I'm happy to score nine goals, we played with a good tempo, but now I'm looking to see how we cope when we play Derby."

Crewe also sent a team to play at Newcastle Town where they won 3-1.

Trialist midfielder Loick Pires played for the full 90 minutes having arrived from Welling United.

Pires, a former Stoke City academy player, is now likely to feature in Friday's friendly at Nantwich Town having scored an eye-catching individual goal.

Alex assistant manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke: "There is nothing better than scoring goals to give us all confidence."

Davis added: "Loick was trying to hard to impress in the first-half but he settled down and played his role much better in the second-half and we need to look at him again."

Crewe's other scorers were Nick Powell and a penalty from Antoni Sarcevic.

After the game at Newcastle, trialist goalkeeper Alan Martin said he had accepted the offer of a contract and will complete his signing on Wednesday.

"I am excited about my new challenge, it's a massive time in my career, and now my aim will to be to take my chance when it comes around."
