Pantilimon impressed against Manchester City in Europe last season

Manchester City have signed goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon from Romanian side Poli Timisoara for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old, whose deal is subject to a successful work permit application, will act as cover for City and England number one Joe Hart.

Roberto Mancini's side were short on goalkeepers following the departure of Shay Given to Aston Villa, external.

Pantilimon, capped 13 times by Romania, starred against City for Timisoara in last season's Europa League play-off.

The keeper, who was also being watched by Inter Milan and West Bromwich Albion, is City's fourth signing of the summer following Gael Clichy, external, Stefan Savic, external and Sergio Aguero, external.

City had been strongly linked with a move for Stoke keeper Thomas Sorensen but the Potters' asking price of £4m dampened their interest.
