Reading midfielder Jem Karacan's season ended by injury

Reading midfielder Jem Karacan has had his season ended after suffering a broken ankle in the 2-0 victory over Leeds United on Friday.

Karacan, 23, was on the end of two hefty first-half challenges, first from Danny Pugh and then from Michael Brown.

He was sent for an X-ray which revealed the Turk, who has played 37 times this season, had suffered a break.

"I was gutted really, but it is just one of those things," Karacan told BBC Radio Berkshire.

Karacan was replaced before half time following Brown's tackle, which was one of a number of bad challenges from Leeds.

Earlier defender Zac Thompson was shown a straight red card for a wild lunge on Royals captain Jobi McAnuff.

"I tried to walk on it but it gave way straight away and I knew something was up with it," added Karacan.

"The surgeon had a little look and it is still quite swollen. It looks as if I'll need an operation to help with the swelling and I'll just go from there."

Manager Brian McDermott was far from impressed with Leeds and felt more than one player should have seen red.

"We just had to keep going," said McDermott.

"There were a lot of tackles and one or two that were questionable to say the least.

"The first one, he (referee Darren Drysdale) made the decision to send the young guy off and the second one Pugh made a tackle on Jem which was a certain red card and he should have been sent off.

"But that's how it is. We've won a game the way we had to win it so we're happy."

Leeds boss Neil Warnock also felt the referee got the decisions the wrong way around.

"I thought he (Thompson) was unlucky. What the assessor's saying is if two feet are off the floor it's a red card but he's not hurt the kid.

"I thought Pugh's tackle was far worse. I thought Pugh should have got sent off."
