West Bromwich Albion have appointed Richard Garlick as the club's new sporting and technical director.

The 36-year-old, currently Albion's legal director-secretary, will replace Dan Ashworth, who will become the Football Association's new director of elite development in the summer.

Garlick will be responsible for the first team, player recruitment, medical services and the academy.

"Richard has in-depth knowledge of the club," said chairman Jeremy Peace.

Garlick, who was on Rotherham United's books until he was 18, joined the Baggies in May 2010 and has worked alongside Ashworth in dealing with players, their contracts and transfers.

He will continue to work closely with Ashworth during a handover period which lasts until the summer.
