Sunderland have signed Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone for an undisclosed fee.

Mannone, 25, joined from Atalanta in 2005, and also had loan spells at Barnsley and Hull City.

The last of the Italian's 26 appearances for Arsenal came in a 3-3 draw with Fulham in November 2012.

His arrival, on a two-year contract, follows the recent departure of first-choice keeper Simon Mignolet to Liverpool for £9m.

Mannone made his Arsenal debut four years after joining the club, having spent played four times for Barnsley in the early part of the 2006-07 season.

He made 10 appearances in the Championship for Hull in 2010-11, and returned to play a further 23 times for the Tigers in the following season.

Mannone, a former Italy Under-21 international, also made several Champions League appearances for Arsenal.
