Joe Bryan: Bristol City midfielder's delight at first goal for club

Joe Bryan says scoring his first goal for Bristol City will give him confidence for the rest of the season.

The 19-year-old Bristol-born midfielder, who came through the club's academy, netted his first professional goal while on loan at Bath in 2011.

And he opened his City account by scoring the winner in their 2-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over local rivals Bristol Rovers.

"I wanted to add goals and assists to my game," he told BBC Radio Bristol.

"I need to keep progressing - I don't want to stagnate and level out.

"Hopefully this will give me confidence as I think it's what I've been lacking."

Bryan, who has made 19 appearances for Bristol City and also scored once in 10 games while on loan at Plymouth, has impressed as a left-winger this season having previously played full-back.

His goal on Wednesday - which came after a superb strike from team-mate Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and a Mark McChrystal equaliser - secured the Robins a place in the second round of the competition.

"It was one of those goals where I did all I could do. I saw Bobby [Reid] turn, and I know he likes to do his little tricks, but I hoped he wouldn't take it.

"I shouted for it and thought I've just got to put it at the far post. I turned away and thought 'please go in'. I heard the fans and saw the players running towards me."

Although a pitch invasion at the final whistle overshadowed the game, the teenager says he was lifted by the 17,8000-strong crowd at Ashton Gate.

"You could really hear the fans tonight. They were absolutely fantastic," added Bryan. "It gives you no end of confidence to hear them screaming and shouting at you."
