Peter Taylor earned his first win as interim manager as Gillingham defeated struggling Notts County.

Chris Whelpdale opened the scoring with a brilliant low drive after winger Myles Weston capitalised on a slip from Gary Liddle.

Whelpdale then turned provider as Danny Kedwell ran on to his through-ball to fire in his sixth goal of the season.

Callum McGregor scored a stunning consolation for the visitors with a solo effort from 25 yards.

"We were desperate for that third goal and I thought we did deserve to get it and then Notts County played some terrific football and were very hard to get the ball off.

"We can defend better than that. We needed three points. The boys needed lifting. We know it can be easier but the way Notts County go forward, they have more bodies than you and it's very hard to get the ball off them.

"We're going to have a go with what we're trying and the players are up for that. It was more defensively tonight that I was disappointed with."

Notts County manager Chris Kiwomya told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"I think we have been beaten by ourselves. We applied pressure in both halves.

"But when you give away goals like that, you are giving yourself a mountain to climb.

"It is not even one goal, we are giving away two goals, so coming in at half-time having to score three goals to win a game."
