Derry City boss Roddy Collins targets league glory

Derry City's new manager Roddy Collins is aiming to bring the Premier Division title to the Brandywell for the first time since 1997.

"I'm here to win the league trophy, it's the only ambition and only thing I am here for," said Collins.

"I'm here for the long haul and I will work 24/7, every day of the year to achieve that goal."

The former Carlisle United and Bohemians boss was named as Declan Devine's successor on Tuesday.

Collins had become a free agent after guiding Athlone Town to this year's First Division title.

The former league and cup double winner with the Bohs also managed Shamrock Rovers and Irish League club Bangor.

He will be assisted by former long-serving Derry skipper Peter Hutton, who recently had a spell managing Finn Harps.

Collins, who plans to move to the Derry area, is excited to be taking charge of the Candystripes.

"It's just fantastic - Derry haven't won a league since 1997 and you are always looking for a massive challenge in your career," added the 52-year-old on Tuesday.

"That's the challenge we have now, to bring a Premier Division title to Derry City.

"I can't wait, I couldn't sleep last night and I've so much enthusiasm.

"We have a very good group of young players and I'll be looking for the desire in their eyes to become champions.

"For Peter Hutton, this is the first day of his apprenticeship to take my job."
