Adebayo Akinfenwa scored twice from the penalty spot as Gillingham secured victory against 10-man Coventry.

Dan Seaborne was sent off for his foul on Cody McDonald, allowing Akinfenwa to open the scoring from the penalty spot.

Callum Wilson equalised with another penalty but Myles Weston's header and a second Akinfenwa spot-kick made it 3-1.

City substitute Carl Baker scored the game's fourth penalty before Jake Hessenthaler sealed back-to-back wins with a 40-yard effort.

Gillingham manager Peter Taylor told BBC Radio Kent:

"Strange as it may sound, I didn't like us tonight. I thought we were sloppy in our defending.

"We were certainly tested tonight. The game could have been 4-4 easy.

"The spirit of the players in fantastic.

"I do feel for our second penalty, the referee got it right. He's allowed advantage, it didn't happen and he's called play back. That happens all over the field."
