World Cup 2014: Hodgson happy if Frank Lampard carries on

Lampard played for England in their warm-up against Ecuador but did not feature in their first two World Cup games

England manager Roy Hodgson says he would be happy if veteran midfielder Frank Lampard continued to make himself available for international football.

Lampard, 36, captains England against Costa Rica on Tuesday in their final game of the World Cup after losses to Italy and Uruguay sent them home.

He will then decide whether to carry on with England,

"Quality players like him could serve the country well in future," Hodgson said.

"I haven't had the conversation with Frank himself yet. I would be more than happy if Frank remains available for selection."

Lampard, without a club after leaving Chelsea, made his England debut in a friendly against Belgium in October 1999 and has won 105 caps.

The midfielder is being linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the USA with New York City FC but has yet to reach a final decision.

Hodgson added: "I am pretty sure that even if I told him the chances are he won't feature quite as much, we would still say 'if you don't retire, please make yourself available'.

"I think Frank is one of those guys who would say 'you can always count on me if you needed me'. He is English and loves playing for England."

With the emergence of Everton's Ross Barkley, 20, Liverpool's Jordan Henderson, 24, and Southampton's Adam Lallana, 26, as international players, Lampard's possible playing time looks likely to be limited if he chooses to continue.

He made 40 appearances for Chelsea last season as Jose Mourinho's side finished third in the Premier League and reached the Champions League semi-final.

The former West Ham man, who will represent England in a fourth international tournament when he leads his country out in Belo Horizonte, said he was still unsure what he will do after the World Cup.

"I have not made any decision on my future. I am just pleased to be involved against Costa Rica and taking part in my third World Cup," Lampard said.

"For me personally, and for the team, it might mean nothing in terms of qualification but for pride we want to perform well."
