Wigan Athletic: Mike Pollitt named goalkeeping coach

Pollitt, who began his career on the books of Manchester United, made 499 league appearances

Mike Pollitt has been named as goalkeeping coach at Championship club Wigan and is to retire from playing.

The 42-year-old, who has played 52 times for Wigan since joining in 2005, will join Uwe Rosler's staff in place of outgoing coach Phil Hughes.

"I had offers to keep playing," Pollitt told the club website.

"To have an opportunity to begin my coaching career at a top Championship club, working with international goalkeepers, was too good to miss."

Pollitt was part of the Wigan side that reached the League Cup final in 2006, while his last appearance for the Latics came in the third round of the 2013 FA Cup - a competition Wigan went on to win.

He also played more than 300 games in two separate spells with Rotherham.

Wigan manager Rosler added: "Mike has been a top goalkeeper with huge experience and I think he will be a great coach.

"We talk about giving young players a chance and it should be the same for young coaches.

"Mike is a real student of the game and has absorbed so many ideas from the people he has worked with over the years. He has some fantastic experience which he will now be able to pass on."
