St Mirren have signed Gateshead forward James Marwood on a one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Marwood, 24, scored 15 goals for Gary Mills' side last term, as the Tynesiders were beaten by Cambridge in the Conference Premier play-off final.

He began his career in the Newcastle academy before spells at Blyth Spartans and Team Northumbria followed.

"I'm delighted to have James on board for next season," Buddies coach Tommy Craig told the club website.

"He will offer us good pace and drive in forward areas, and I see in him lots of development and a player with an eye for a goal."

The England C international, the son of former England winger Brian Marwood, has been at Gateshead since 2010.

"It's the right time of my career, I'm 24 now," he told BBC Newcastle.

"I have had a good spell at Gateshead but it's time to move on and test myself at a higher level.

"You'd be a bit naive not to be nervous going to places like Celtic Park. I've just got to make sure I work hard and enjoy it."
