Notts County have signed former Preston North End midfielder Nicky Wroe on a two-year deal.

Wroe, 28, who joined the Preston from Shrewsbury in 2012, made 54 appearances in his two seasons at Deepdale.

He played just seven games for the Lilywhites last term, rejoining Shrewsbury before moving to Oxford on loan for the remainder of the season.

"Hopefully I can come back this season refreshed and stake claim for a spot here," Wroe told BBC Radio Nottingham.

The former Barnsley trainee, who also had spells at Hamilton, York and Torquay United, helped Shrewsbury to automatic promotion from League Two before moving to Preston.

But Wroe quickly realised he would struggle to hold his place Simon Grayson's side in his second season with the League One club and was eventually released at the end of the campaign.

"I found my opportunities limited and just got the impression that maybe I wasn't in his plans," said Wroe.

"After 15-20 games when guys are doing well you sometime have to have a rethink and try get out and play some games, so I went out on loan.

"It was tough, especially after the season I had previously at Preston which was decent.

"I wanted to really be playing like I had done, and like every footballer you don't like not playing, but the lads were doing well so I couldn't have too many gripes about it."
