Newport County have signed Peterborough United goalkeeper Joe Day on loan.

The 24-year-old joins on a four-week deal and Newport boss Justin Edinburgh says he will be the club's first choice keeper.

The Exiles also have the option of extending Day's stay at Rodney Parade.

"There's always an opportunity to make it longer if Joe feels it's right for him and if it's right for the football club," said Edinburgh.

Day will start Saturday's match away to Portsmouth, subject to clearance.

He signed for Peterborough in May 2011 and started his career at Rushden & Diamonds in 2007 where Edinburgh gave him his debut.

"I'm delighted to have Joe here," said Edinburgh, "having worked with him in the past."

Edinburgh says the move means County's usual number one Lenny Pidgely now faces a challenge to get his place back in the starting line-up.

"I don't think Lenny's produced his best form as yet," said the former Tottenham defender.

"Joe's here to play and to push Lenny. Lenny's position now is to try and force his way back into the team, it's as simple as that."
