Scotland: Charlie Mulgrew plays down win over Republic

Charlie Mulgrew says Scotland have achieved nothing yet in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign despite the 1-0 defeat of Republic of Ireland.

The midfielder was named man of the match after the game that keeps the Scots in the hunt to top Group D.

"We've not done anything," said Mulgrew. "We've had a few good results, but we've not really done anything.

"It is just another win. There's a long, long way to go and we're just taking each game as it comes."

Scotland started the game three points behind the Irish and, had they suffered defeat at Celtic Park, the hosts would have been six adrift of leaders Poland.

Instead, Gordon Strachan's side are level with the Irish and Germany behind the Poles.

Scotland striker Chris Martin admitted there was a sense of relief in the dressing-room at the victory that came thanks to Shaun Maloney's 75th-minute winner.

"It feels big just now, but you never really know," he said. "The manager summed it up well by saying you never know when the big result will come in this group.

"It was built up a lot and that was probably why it was slightly edgy on the pitch.

"It was the one that was willing to stand up and be counted and I think we did that very well and showed character and came out on top."

Martin agreed with the general premise that the top group placings might not be decided until the final games.

"I think it is going to be very tight right down to the wire," he said. "There's some very good teams in this group and I think it's been said many times - it's probably the toughest group and we need to concentrate on every single game, get as many points as we can and see where that takes us."

Full-back Steven Whittaker agreed with the Derby County striker.

"There's still a lot of football to be played, but it is a good run and momentum we are building here and it will give us confidence going into the next fixtures," he said.

"In the grand scheme of things, it would have been disappointing to lose, but three points is massive.

"Beforehand, they were saying it was a must-win game, but there's still a lot of football to be played in the group.

"But obviously winning the three points is now massive for us and it keeps us going in the right direction.

"I think tonight's finish will go a long way to determining where we're going to finish."
