Parma FC sit at the bottom of Serie A, eight points from safety

Serie A side Parma have been deducted a point for failing to pay player wages.

The Italian Football Federation charged the club last month for not paying wages dating back to November 2013.

It has now punished the club by deducting a point and fining club president Tommaso Ghirardi and director Pietro Leonardi 5,000 euros (£3,951) each.

Parma are bottom of the table with just five points from 14 games and are eight points from safety.

The side finished sixth in the table last year, but missed out on the Europa League for not meeting Uefa's club licensing criteria because of unpaid bills.

The two-time Uefa Cup winners, who have also won the Coppa Italia three times, are managed by former Italy midfielder Roberto Donadoni, who managed the national side between 2006-2008

It has been reported that the club are on the brink of being bought by a Russian-Cypriot conglomerate, which would enable them to pay most of the club's debts.

Such a move would make Parma the third foreign-owned club in Serie A, joining AS Roma and Inter Milan.
