Burton remained level on points with Shrewsbury at the top of League Two following a 2-0 victory over Oxford.

Adam McGurk's 13th-minute header set the Brewers on their way, but had defender Phil Edwards to thank for denying Johnny Mullins an equaliser.

U's top scorer Danny Hylton steered wide and Josh Ashby's free-kick hit the crossbar as the visitors pushed hard.

But Lucas Akins' late drilled effort secured Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's side three points and a 12th game unbeaten.

Shrewsbury's 2-0 win at over AFC Wimbledon keeps them above Burton on goal difference, while Oxford remain in 17th place.

Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink told BBC Radio Derby:

Hasselbaink on Burton v Oxford

"This is the best game we have played. Organise-wise we looked solid, we looked very disciplined and it was a very professional win.

"First half I think Adam McGurk was our main man, he looked very sharp. He won all the second balls, he held the ball up and caused them problems.

"We had a few good moments with one-twos but we overplayed it a little bit. I would like to have seen a shot but that is still to come and the boys are working hard on that improvement."
