Adam Johnson: Sunderland midfielder plays against West Ham

Adam Johnson has played for Sunderland for the first time since his arrest.

The midfielder, 27, was suspended by the club after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl on 2 March.

The suspension was lifted on Wednesday by new manager Dick Advocaat and Johnson was named as a substitute for the Premier League game at West Ham.

Johnson replaced Steven Fletcher in the 73rd minute of the match as his side were beaten 1-0.

"He came in on Wednesday and I spoke with him," Advocaat said in his post-match press conference. "Life goes on.

"He did well, because he is a very good player. I was happy I could bring him in and so that is good to know."

West Ham striker Diafra Sakho scored the only goal of the game in the 88th minute to leave Sunderland 17th in the table, one point above the relegation zone.

After his arrest, Johnson was released on police bail, which was extended to 23 April.
