Northampton Town: Midfielder Nicky Adams sign three-year deal

Northampton Town have signed Bury midfielder Nicky Adams, 28, on a three-year contract.

Adams scored once in 44 appearances for the promoted League Two side and he admitted his shock at being transfer listed by the Shakers.

"I had a good season, we got promoted, and returning from a few days away, I was told to find a new club," Adams told BBC Radio Northampton.

"I was shocked but they said they were going in a different direction."

He added: "I went in to get my promotion medal and I thought I was going to get the programme for the summer but I was sat down and told they wanted to go in a different direction.

"I asked to see if I could fight for my place but that wasn't an option."

Cobblers assistant Alan Knill managed Bury when Adams came through the youth set-up between 2005-08 as the Welshman went on to make 94 first-team appearances before being sold to Leicester, and going on to play for Brentford, Rochdale and Rotherham before returning to Bury.

Adams said it only took a couple of days for Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder to request a meeting.

"They put the list out there and after a couple of days, Chris asked me to come down and speak," he explained.

"As soon as Northampton came in for me, I wanted to go and speak and when I came down here and spoke to the gaffer and looked around the place I could see that it is an ambitious club and that's what I want to be a part of."
