Tottenham Hotspur have signed Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer from Cologne for an undisclosed fee on a five-year deal.

The 22-year-old centre-half moved to Germany in 2012 from LASK Linz in his native Austria and made 72 appearances for the Bundesliga club.

"Kevin's gone on to become a regular in the Cologne defence, as they earned promotion to the German top-flight," a statement on the Spurs website, external said.

"He was a standout performer in their first season back in the Bundesliga."

Wimmer has made one senior international appearance for Austria and has been named in the squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier with Russia in Moscow on 14 June.

The 6ft 2in defender is Mauricio Pochettino's first signing of the summer.

Although Tottenham have not disclosed a fee for Wimmer, various reports suggest they have paid around £4.3m., external
