Rotherham United are to sign defender Lewis Buxton following his release by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The 31-year-old has agreed a one-year deal, with an option for a further 12 months, reports BBC Radio Sheffield.

Buxton was Wednesday's player of the year in 2013, but only made 10 appearances for the Owls last season because of injury problems.

"He's an experienced defender and proven Championship footballer," said Millers assistant boss Paul Rayner.

"It's taken a few weeks to get it over the line, but we're delighted to finally have him on board,

"He was anxious to sign and he's keen to come and join us here and we're absolutely delighted to have him on board," he told the Rotherham website., external

Buxton played 207 games for the Owls after joining them from Stoke City in 2008, initially on loan.

His move will go through on 1 July and he is Rotherham's third summer signing following the arrival of Aidy White and former Owls team-mate Joe Mattock.
