Tom Hopper: Scunthorpe sign sacked Leicester City striker

Tom Hopper scored four goals in 12 appearances during a loan spell with Scunthorpe last season

Scunthorpe United have signed striker Tom Hopper, who was recently sacked by Leicester City for his part in a racist sex video.

The 21-year-old had his contract terminated earlier this month because of the video, filmed on the club's end-of-season tour of Thailand.

Goalkeeper Adam Smith and midfielder James Pearson were also sacked and all three have apologised.

Keeper Smith joined League Two side Northampton on Friday.

Hopper had a loan spell with the League One side last season, scoring four goals in 12 appearances.

On announcing the signing the club issued a statement saying they "believed in giving people a second chance".

"The club would like to make it clear that we are fully aware of the recent publicity surrounding the young striker and have put a considerable amount of thought into the decision to sign him," the statement said.

"However, Tom is a player that we are very much aware of, having signed him on loan last season, and we feel that we know his true character, which was not represented by this regrettable incident.

"The club hopes that our supporters understand our position on this matter and will allow Tom to do his talking on the pitch, in the knowledge that we will be working with the player closely to rebuild his reputation and ensure there is no repeat of his recent indiscretion."
