Colchester United have completed the signing of former Yeovil captain Joe Edwards, with the club not revealing the length of the deal.

The 24 year-old midfielder, who made 39 appearances for the Glovers during the 2014-15 season, has been a free agent this summer.

Having featured heavily for Yeovil, he turned down a fresh deal following the team's relegation from League One.

"For me it was an easy decision," Edwards told BBC Essex.

"It's a really good set-up they've got here, with a nice new stadium. I was keen to keep playing in League One and they said they would give me that opportunity."

Although Edwards played briefly in the Championship for his first club Bristol City, and also appeared in the National League for Bath and Stockport, most of his experience is in League One with the Glovers.

He believes his new team have the ability to thrive, adding: "We've got a lot of good young players with a lot of potential. They're very enthusiastic with a lot of energy which you need in League One.

"I'm happy to make the move now and progress in my career, and I feel I'm doing so with this."
