Manchester City began the defence of their Continental Tyres Cup title with a 3-0 win at Doncaster Rovers Belles.

Midfielder Isobel Christiansen opened the scoring shortly after the break, volleying in Demi Stokes' cross.

Nikita Parris doubled the holders' lead when she tapped the ball in, following impressive passing from Christiansen.

Toni Duggan then netted her fourth goal in three games by bundling home after Nicola Hobbs saved her first effort and Rhiannon Roberts blocked Parris' shot.

Natasha Dowie scored twice against her former club to help Liverpool to a 2-0 win against Everton in the Merseyside derby.

It took the forward less than a minute to find the net, taking advantage of an underhit back-pass to goalkeeper Kirstie Levell to slot home from close range.

Everton captain Michelle Hinnigan saw her shot pushed on to the post by Reds keeper Libby Stout, the home side's best opportunity of the game.

Dowie then claimed her second goal of the night when she blasted the ball into the net from inside the box.

The 27-year-old had two further goals ruled out for offside as the WSL 1 side claimed all three points in their opening match of the competition.
