Coventry City teenager James Maddison is starting to mature as a player but is "not the finished article", says Sky Blues manager Tony Mowbray.

The 18-year-old forward is preparing for his second campaign for the League One club, having scored twice in 18 appearances during the 2014-15 season.

"He's starting to come of age - he's looking like he could become a real focal point of our team," Mowbray said.

"He's not the finished article by a long shot but he is very talented boy."

Coventry-born Maddison made his City debut in their Capital One Cup defeat by Cardiff in August 2014 and scored in the final-day win at Crawley that secured Coventry's third-tier status.

Maddison, who usually operates just behind the strikers, is set to be more involved this term, although Mowbray is keen to point out the teenager still has a lot to learn.

"He doesn't run into the box enough for where we play him. Every goal can't be a bender into the top corner," Mowbray told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. "They're lessons but he's only a boy."

Mowbray is also keen to see how new signing Adam Armstrong, the fifth recruit of the the summer, gets on with Maddison.

"When you add Adam to our team, there could be more of a cutting edge and more thrust," he said.

"We want players who can bring some dynamic movement and the search goes on. We're working very hard and it's about being patient."
