Calum Gallagher has opted to move to St Mirren despite having a year left on his Rangers contract

St Mirren have signed forward Calum Gallagher from Championship rivals Rangers - and the player could face his former club when they meet on Friday.

Gallagher, who has agreed a one-year deal, told the St Mirren website:, external "I'm really excited to get started.

"I know it's a big season for the club having dropped down a level and the main aim has to be to get us back up there as quick as we can."

The 20-year-old had one year left on his Ibrox contract.

He had enjoyed loan spells at Alloa and East Stirlingshire and played five games for Rangers last year.

The 20-year-old began last season at Cowdenbeath before returning to Ibrox but an injury hampered his chances of first-team football.

Buddies manager Ian Murray revealed he had been keeping an eye on the player during his loan stint at Cowdenbeath, and added: "He's quick, he's very direct, he likes to play on the shoulder and there's no doubts he's got the technical attributes to do quite well.

"Of course, he's not trained with the players yet and he's not integrated into the team at all but he's certainly an option for us now on Friday night."
