Port Vale have signed Newcastle United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick on a short-term contract.

The 22-year-old former England youth international will help cover for injured first-choice keeper Chris Neal.

Alnwick becomes Vale manager Rob Page's ninth signing of the summer.

He played eight times for the Magpies last term, including six Premier League games, before being loaned out to League One side Bradford City late on in the season.

Jak the Giant Killer

Jak Alnwick made his Premier League debut as a second half substitute against Chelsea in December when Rob Elliot was injured. The game was level at 0-0. Two goals from Papiss Cisse put the Magpies in control before Didier Drogba pulled one back seven minutes from time. Alnwick then tipped over another Drogba effort in injury time as eventual champions Chelsea suffered their first defeat in 23 games.

"Jak is a very talented player who has experience at the highest level with Newcastle United and he's also had a taste of League One with Bradford," said Page. "We're very pleased to have him on board and the players and coaches are all looking forward to working with him."

Alnwick will compete with Sam Johnson for the number one spot for Saturday's opening League One game of the season against Crewe Alexandra.
