Darren Ambrose has had three spells at Ipswich

Colchester United have signed former Ipswich midfielder Darren Ambrose on a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old ex-Charlton and Crystal Palace player was released by Ipswich at the end of the 2014-15 season.

Ambrose, who began his career with the Tractor Boys, made eight appearances last season and scored one goal.

"I feel as though I'm joining a club on the up. The facilities are fantastic and it's a young, vibrant team," Ambrose told BBC Essex.

"It's a bit weird being one of the older players in the dressing room. I joked that it felt like going into a youth club this morning.

"It's a move I feel comfortable with. The team plays the right way and I spoke with Elliott Hewitt at Ipswich, who was on loan here last season, and he told me what good football they play.

"Obviously they finished last season on a high and did well to stay up. Speaking to the manager he said there were patches last season where they lost six games on the bounce and then four. If we can break up those sort of runs then we should be ok."
