Manager Terry Butcher hopes Regan Poole will remain at Newport County beyond this transfer window.

Poole has interested Fulham and has spent time at Liverpool and Manchester United.

After impressing in County's 2-1 League Cup defeat at Wolves, Poole said he did not know if a move would happen during the window.

But Butcher said there had been no fresh inquiries and added: ''I am very optimistic he will stay here.''

Poole, 17, still has a year left on his scholar's contract, but has already been offered a new senior deal by the club.

Ex-England centre back Butcher said: ''I would like him to stay here. We want him to stay.

''He is happy, enjoying his football, you can see that.

"He did not play in the first game, played in the second and could play in the third.

''So he has the opportunity to get on a good run.

"He already has a dozen games under his belt from last season and did very well.

''But it is a new team, a new environment and we are trying to make it something special here.

"I think we have something special. We want to try and develop that and he is an integral part of that.''

Wolves loan centre back Aaron Hayden, having been ineligible for the cup tie against his parent club, is looking to return for Saturday's League Two encounter at home against Stevenage Borough.

But the form of Poole and fellow teenage defender Keiron Parselle at Molineux has given Butcher food for thought in selection.

Following the installing of an interim board of directors, Butcher is relishing his first competitive home game at the County helm.

He said: ''With the news this week of a takeover you sense a new dawn and a new sense of optimism at the club.

"Hopefully the fans will buy into that.''
