Alex Fernandez has made five starts for Espanyol in La Liga

Reading have signed Spanish midfielder Alex Fernandez on a season-long loan deal from La Liga side Espanyol.

Fernandez has made 31 appearances for Espanyol since signing in 2013 following his release by Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old has also had a spell with Croatian club HNK Rijeka, who he joined on a five-month loan in January.

"He is a talented young footballer who can play in different positions throughout midfield," Reading manager Steve Clarke told the club's website.

"Any footballer who has come through the youth system at Real Madrid always gets a good football education and will have a good understanding of the game.

"When we knew we could get him on loan for a season it was too good an opportunity to miss."
