Newcastle's poor start to the season continued as they were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Lewis McGugan's 76th-minute shot from outside the box gave victory to Wednesday, who made 10 changes from their previous match.

Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko had clipped the post before the break.

Siem de Jong missed two good chances to equalise late on, scuffing one shot wide before volleying over the bar as Wednesday reached the fourth round for the first time in 14 seasons.
