Aston Villa: Remi Garde encouraged by 'spirit'

Aston Villa's battling goalless draw against Manchester City shows they have the spirit to survive in the Premier League, says new manager Remi Garde.

Villa, who sacked Tim Sherwood on 25 October, remain bottom of the table.

"I've seen a team that played as a unit and players happy at the end so, hopefully, something's starting to change," said Garde.

"Eleven games have been played and we have five points but the spirit we've shown makes me think we can do it."

Frenchman Garde was taking charge of Villa for the first time and saw his side end a run of seven successive defeats to claim their first point since 29 August.

"We have to stay realistic and there's still a lot of work to do but it was important for the players to regain a little bit of confidence," added Garde.

"When you keep a clean sheet against City, it's quite good for your confidence.

"I've only been with the players for three sessions but, for me, this is a base to build on."
