Tyrone rout Armagh as Donegal exit despite victory over Queen's

Tyrone set up a Dr McKenna Cup semi-final against Derry at Omagh on Sunday as they hammered Armagh 5-16 to 0-7 in the Section A clash at Healy Park.

Goals from Ciaran McGinley and Matthew Donnelly helped the Red Hands lead 2-10 to 0-4 at half-time.

Two second-half goals by PJ Lavery came either side of a Peter Harte penalty.

Ryan Rafferty scored a hat-trick of goals for Queen's but Michael Murphy, Colm McFadden and Rory Kavanagh netted for Donegal as they won 3-16 to 3-5.

Despite Donegal's win, Monaghan's comprehensive success over Fermanagh means that the Farney County pipped Jim McGuinness's side for the best loser's qualification spot.

At Omagh, an experimental Red Hand side gave manager Mickey Harte plenty to think about as he constructs a squad for the season ahead as they hit five goals and had 11 scorers.

The Orchard men simply had no answer to the movement and power of the McKenna Cup holders.

Shay McGuigan's defence-splitting pass created the opening for McGinley's 16th minute goal, and the Red Hands had a second goal through Donnelly eight minutes later.

The classy McGuigan, younger brother of Brian, became the ninth Tyrone player to score, giving his side a 2-10 to 0-4 interval lead.

Lavery slotted home a third goal within 30 seconds of the restart, and Harte punished Andy Mallon's foul on Donnelly by slotting home a 44th-minute penalty.

The Red Hands completed a ruthless demolition job with a superb strike for Lavery's second goal three minutes from the end which was the new panelist's third three-pointer in as many games.

Two Michael Murphy points edged Donegal three ahead at Ballybofey before Rafferty's first goal on 18 minutes levelled the contest.

Donegal duly moved four ahead again before a burst of action in the minutes before the break as Rafferty's second goal was followed by Murphy's emphatic finish to the net in injury time.

Rafferty completed his hat-trick four minutes into the second period to cut Donegal's lead to two as Queen's still hadn't managed to kick the ball over the bar.

However, Donegal continued to dominate the majority of play and McFadden's goal killed off the QUB challenge before sub Kavanagh netted in the closing stages.

Christy Toye returned for his first Donegal outing since the 2012 All-Ireland final while Queen's players Ryan Murray, Gerard Collins and Jack Dowling were all handed black cards.
