Tyrone beat Louth in the first round of the All-Ireland qualifiers

Tyrone overpowered Louth by a massive margin of 17 points at Healy Park to claim their place in the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

Mickey Harte's men were only 0-9 to 0-7 ahead at half-time but they ran away with it in a one-sided second period.

The goals came within five minutes of the restart, the first scored by Emmett McKenna from Peter Harte's lay-off.

Stephen O'Neill palmed into the net for the second after Mattie Donnelly had played the ball across.

It was a second heavy Championship defeat for Louth as three weeks earlier they had slumped to a 1-22 to 1-7 defeat by Kildare in the Leinster quarter-finals.

Things were looking bleak again for Louth as they trailed 0-7 to 0-2 after just 19 minutes in Omagh.

Darren McCurry landed four of Tyrone's early points and his fellow corner-forward Conor McAliskey got two with the other home score a free by skipper Sean Cavanagh.

Louth, whose opening scores had come from Andy McDonnell and Ryan Burns, hit back and were only 0-7 to 0-6 down on 25 minutes.

Burns notched his second from play, Brian White converted a free and then replacement forward Conor Grimes and McDonnell punished poor kick-outs by keeper Niall Morgan by adding quickfire points.

Captain Cavanagh sent over two frees and Louth's White a long-range effort to leave Tyrone 0-9 to 0-7 ahead at half-time.

Tyrone were ruthless in the early stages of the second half and the two goals effectively ended the contest.

Sean Cavanagh, keeper Niall Morgan, Darren McCurry, Ciaran McGinley, McKenna and Conor McAliskey all chipped in with points as the Red Hands raced away to a comfortable victory.

Shay McGuigan, on his Championship debut, should have scored Tyrone's third goal but blasted against the bar when faced with an open goal.

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte: "We were very unhappy to be only two points up at half-time.

"We were asking serious questions of ourselves in the dressing room because the next 35 minutes were important for the future of this team"
