Bernd Wiesberger overhauls Lee Westwood at Malaysian Open

Wiesberger has moved into the world's top 50 for the first time on the back of strong recent performances

Austrian Bernd Wiesberger carded a 63 to take a two-shot lead at 17 under par after the third round of the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

The 29-year-old began three shots adrift but birdied six of his first seven holes and also the final three.

Joint overnight leader Alejandro Canizares is second after finishing eagle-birdie-bogey for a 68.

Defending champion Lee Westwood, joint leader after both days, is 14 under with fellow Englishman Paul Waring.

Westwood, winner of 14 titles in Asia, claimed a seven-shot triumph last year, but needed birdies at the final two holes to ensure a sub-70 round at the Kuala Lumpur Country Club on Saturday.

"I didn't play particularly well today, so I was pleased to shoot 69, which keeps me in the hunt," the 41-year-old world number 30 said.

"I couldn't feel my hip action, especially early on. You can get into a false mindset, where you convince yourself that you're not playing very well, when it's just that someone else has had a great start and is hitting it close."

World number 264 Waring, who had a hole-in-one at the 15th on the opening day, carded two eagles and birdied the final three holes in his 65.

"I hope to carry on attacking flags and see how we go," said the 30-year-old from Merseyside.

Both of Wiesberger's two European Tour titles to date came in 2012 but he has been in fine form this year, recording three straight top-six finishes before this event.

"There are a lot of good scores out there, so I'll be trying to make some birdies again," he said after his lowest round on the European Tour.

India's Anirban Lahiri posted the round of the day with 10 birdies in a 62 to move into fifth place.
