Ice Hockey World Championship: GB beat Estonia for second win

GB were made to work hard for their second win in two games by Estonia, who had lost 7-3 to top seeds Korea in their first outing

Great Britain claimed their second win in Division 1 Group B of the World Championships with a 2-1 victory over Estonia in Eindhoven.

Robert Farmer grabbed the winner with just under six minutes remaining after GB had gone ahead in the first period.

David Phillips gave Britain the lead but Robert Rooba equalised for Estonia.

But Farmer's goal, following a goalmouth scramble was decisive for GB, who next face top seeds South Korea in the World Championships' third tier.

Britain's young team, coached by Pete Russell, had included five debutants for their opening game, a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over Croatia.

But it was the experienced Phillips of Belfast Giants, who had won his 50th cap against Croatia, who put his team in front against the lowest-ranked side in the group.

Estonia, beaten 7-3 by the Koreans in their opening match, then enjoyed a good spell and forced several good saves from netminder Ben Bowns.

Rooba capitalised on a mistake to level the scores, but a long spell of pressure in the third period paid off when Nottingham Panthers forward Farmer struck to clinch the game for Britain.

"Some of these games are not easy and we had to work hard. I'm really proud of them," said Russell.

Only the group winners will be promoted to Division 1 Group A and Thursday's opponents South Korea have invested heavily in their side as hosts of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

"There's a bit of pressure on us now, when you're supposed to win it's hard," Russell added. "We are up against a top, top team next, but we have a chance now."
