St Helens have signed goal-kicking half-back Gareth O'Brien on loan for a month from neighbours Warrington.

O'Brien, 21, has played just three times for the Wolves in 2013.

He had a temporary spell at Castleford Tigers earlier this season and has also featured for Warrington's dual-registration side Swinton Lions.

O'Brien could make his debut for Saints, who lie eighth in Super League after losing to Warrington in their last outing, at Huddersfield on Monday.

A number of injury problems have forced head coach Nathan Brown to utilise players such as full-back Paul Wellens and forward Jon Wilkin at half-back this term.

Walsh has passion for Super League

But he has strengthened in that position for next season, with Luke Walsh due to arrive from NRL side Penrith Panthers.

The 26-year-old told BBC Radio Merseyside, external that he has regularly watched Super League matches for many years and is excited by the prospect of playing in England.

"I've always loved watching Lee Briers [of Warrington Wolves]. I love the way he plays because he's very smart and he always seems to be ahead of the game," said Walsh.

"I was a big really fan of [former Saints scrum-half] Sean Long too and they've been my two favourite players."
