Chairman Michael Carter has backed Wakefield Trinity head coach James Webster, despite Saturday's 80-0 defeat by Warrington stretching their winless run to eight Super League games.

Having won their opening two matches of the season against Castleford and Hull KR, the Wildcats have not picked up a point since 15 February.

Webster was appointed in June 2014, and retained Super League status last term.

"I've given him my full backing," Carter told BBC Radio Leeds.

"It's never crossed my mind [to sack Webster]. James is doing the job to the best of his ability, as I am and I firmly believe James will pull us round.

"It's been a tough eight weeks, but I've got to support him and the players as well have to take some personal responsibility."

Saturday's loss was just six points short of the Belle Vue club's all-time heaviest defeat of 86-0 by rivals Castleford in April 1995.

Former Hull KR, Parramatta and Balmain playmaker Webster said his future was not in his hands.

"I'm sure there'll be plenty of people out there quite happy to see me go, performances haven't been in good but that's up to Michael and the board," Webster said after the loss at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

"Coaches always think they can turn around and improve teams, if the board feel I'm not able to do that then so be it.

"That's the situation you put yourself in as a coach, you put yourselves out there to be shot down."
