Scarlets reveal flanker Josh Turnbull has shoulder surgery

Scarlets flanker Josh Turnbull has undergone shoulder surgery and will miss the start of the 2013-14 season.

Centre Scott Williams and full-back Gareth Owen have also had operations.

Fly-half Rhys Priestland and hooker Ken Owens are also being monitored for injuries following their Pro12 semi-final defeat by Ulster.

"All the operations have gone well and the players will be assessed in the coming weeks," said Scarlets medical boss Andrew Walker.

Centre Williams, hooker Owens and fly-half Rhys Priestland have all withdrawn from Wales' summer tour to Japan because of injury.

Back-rower Turnbull underwent bi-lateral shoulder surgery on a long-standing injury and has been ruled out for 12 weeks, missing pre-season at Parc y Scarlets.

Centre Williams underwent surgery on Friday and his rehabilitation is expected to take 12 weeks.

Full back Owen has had screws that were inserted during previous knee surgery removed and will be sidelined for eight weeks.

Hooker Owens has been released back to the Scarlets to recover from a neck injury suffered against Ulster.

He underwent three scans in Belfast and will be assessed fully by the Scarlets next week and it is hoped he will take a full part in pre-season training.

Fly-half Priestland will return to action in pre-season as he hopes to overcome a fresh Achilles tendon strain, having withdrawn during the warm-up for the clash against Ulster.

Walker added: "We want to give them as much time as possible in recovery during the off-season and in many cases some well-earned rest and the chance to get some full recovery and rehabilitation."
