Wales v Australia: Steve Tandy 'proud' of 'outstanding' Rhys Webb

Rhys Webb has started twice for Wales, and made four appearances as a substitute.

Ospreys coach Steve Tandy has praised "outstanding" scrum-half Rhys Webb after his selection to play for Wales against the Wallabies.

Webb was selected ahead of Mike Phillips after impressing in the Ospreys' unbeaten start in the Pro12.

Tandy praises the way Webb, 25, has fought back from serious injuries.

"It would have been easy for him to be down on the injuries he's had, and I'm just really proud," he said.

Webb underwent cruciate knee ligament surgery in 2013 and had an operation on knee cartilage damage in 2014.

His latest surgery ruled him out of Wales' summer tour of South Africa after he had been selected for the 2014 Six Nations matches against France and England.

"Without any shadow of a doubt, he's been in outstanding form," added Tandy.

"I'm just really pleased for Rhys - it's well deserved.

"The fact he's come back from the injuries he's had, the form he's taken in to the start of the season he's been outstanding for us, and it's a real credit to him and a real proud moment after everything he's gone through as well."

Webb is selected alongside his Ospreys half-back partner Dan Biggar - the first time the pair will have started an international match together.

They were half-back partners for 13 minutes when Wales beat the Barbarians 30-21 in June 2012, when Webb was a second half replacement for Lloyd Williams.

"I'm just really proud to have our half-backs representing Wales at the weekend," added Tandy.

Webb, who will be making his seventh appearance in a Wales shirt, believes the understanding the pair have built with the region will be of benefit to Wales.

"We are both on the same hymn sheet," said Webb.

"The way we control the game with the Ospreys, so we just need to keep that going this weekend with Wales as well.

"Obviously he's [Biggar] going to want the ball all the time, but it's just me taking ownership of that sometimes and getting the boys out of jail if needed."
