Adam Jones says it is "up to others" to persuade him to come out of international retirement for Wales.
The prop, 34, quit Test rugby after his omission from the Six Nations squad.
Front-row injuries have hit Wales for Saturday's trip to face Italy in Rome, prompting calls for Jones to return, but coach Warren Gatland says he will not "go on bended knees" to Jones.
Jones told Talksport that the door to a recall was "pretty shut", adding: "It's up to other people to open it."
Jones also insisted his retirement ahead of the Six Nations was not a "knee-jerk reaction".
He was brought off 30 minutes into his final Test appearance against South Africa in June.
Further selection blows then followed for the 95-times capped player.
"It wasn't premature," said the Cardiff Blues star, who quit in January.
"I'd had a knock in the summer, I'd had a knock not getting picked in the autumn and then the Six Nations... not getting picked was another knock."
Former Wales stars Shane Williams and Jonathan Davies are among those to have suggested Wales should call on Jones.
Wales have made two enforced changes for the game against Italy, including bringing in Aaron Jarvis to replace the injured Samson Lee at tight-head.
Lee, Jarvis and Scott Andrews were all preferred to Jones for the Six Nations.
Lee may not make the 2015 World Cup in the autumn after suffering an Achilles tendon injury in last weekend's win over Ireland.
