Madeline Perry defeated by Raneem El Weleily in British Open

Madeline Perry is out of the British Open after a straight-sets defeat by Raneem El Weleily in the last-16 encounter in Hull on Thursday.

The Banbridge player, ranked 11th in the world, was beaten 11-7, 12-10, 11-4 by the world number three.

Perry progressed to the second round thanks to a 12-10 11-8 11-9 victory over qualifier Emma Beddoes at the KC Arena on Tuesday.

Perry won the Texas Open in Dallas earlier this month.

El Weleily will face former British Open finalist, Jenny Duncalf of England, in the quarter-finals after the eighth seed defeated another Egyptian Nour El Tayeb 14-12 11-4 11-4.

Second seed Laura Massaro also advanced with a 7-11 12-10 11-9 11-6 victory over India's Dipika Pallikal

In the men's event, there was a surprise defeat for Egypt's Mohamed El Shorbagy, who came within three points of becoming world champion in Doha in December, but missed three match points against Cameron Pilley in Hull.

The 22-year-old sixth seed took the first two games against Netherlands-based Australian Pilley and then led 9-3 in the third.

But somehow Pilley won the next eight points, transforming the contest, and he went on to win 13-15 4-11 11-9 11-6 13-11.

Top seed Ramy Ashour was a 3-0 winner over qualifier Chris Simpson.
