Presenter of Grandstand for a decade from 1958, Coleman provided the nation with news on major sporting events every Saturday afternoon
Coleman presented BBC Sports Personality of the Year from 1961 to 1983. He is pictured here with Wimbledon champion Ann Jones, winner in 1969
He was also presenter of Sportsnight With Coleman, where he rounded up the mid-week sporting action
He was Match of the Day presenter for five years between 1968 and 1973, before being replaced by Jimmy Hill
A BBC senior football commentator from 1971 to 1979, he commentated on World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978, European Cup finals in 1973 and 1975 and FA Cup finals from 1972 to 1976 and in 1978
Coleman enjoyed a great relationship with captains such as Ian Botham, Willie Carson and Bill Beaumont as presenter of Question of Sport from 1979 to 1997
Coleman worked on 11 summer Olympics for the BBC before retiring from broadcasting after the Sydney Games in 2000
