Were there two Championship trophies on the final day?

  • Published

Two Championship trophies were on standby during the final fixtures of the season.

Leeds United were away to Plymouth at Home Park, while Burnley were at home to Millwall at Turf Moor.

With more than 300 miles separating the two grounds, the English Football League (EFL) had arranged for a replica trophy to be at Burnley's stadium in the event they won the league title.

If the title is still to be decided going into the final day of the season, the EFL arrange for a replica trophy to be at the ground of the team in second, in this case Burnley.

Scott Parker's side were seconds away from getting their hands on that trophy before Manor Solomon's stoppage-time winner secured the title for Leeds in dramatic fashion.

What about medals?

There are enough medals made to cover the various potential winners / promotions throughout the divisions, so in comparison to the Championship trophy, these aren't replicas.

The EFL rules state that the winners of each division receive 30 medals. Twenty five are given to the players and five are given to staff including: the chief administrator/club secretary, the manager, the senior therapist and two further staff, who are not players.

The football club will determine which player receives a medal. Additional medals may be presented if prior consent is granted by the EFL.
